Technology and Virtual Classroom Etiquette Policy

(for live online DPS trainings)

1. Policy Statement

These simple guidelines show how you can use your microphone, camera, and chat so our DPS online trainings stay smooth, focused, and respectful for everyone.

This policy governs eligibility for Certificates of Completion and establishes documented standards for verification.

I. Joining the Session

This policy applies to:

  • Join on time using the link sent to you.

  • Use your real name or membership email (or your center’s standard name format).

  • Check your internet, audio, and video before the session starts, if possible.

II. Microphone (Audio)

  • Mute your microphone when you are not speaking.

  • Unmute only when asked or when it is your turn to speak.

  • Avoid talking over others; wait for your turn or use the “raise hand” or cha

III. Camera (Video)

  • Turn your camera on when you can, especially during discussions.

  • If you must turn it off (connection or privacy), stay active in the chat.

  • Avoid doing things on camera that may distract others.

IV. Chat and Reactions

  • Use the chat to ask questions, share ideas, and answer prompts.

  • Keep messages short, clear, and related to the training.

  • Do not send spam, private jokes, or side conversations.

  • Use emojis and reactions in a respectful and professional way.

V. Respectful Behavior Online

  • Speak and write in a polite and respectful tone.

  • Do not post or say anything offensive, rude, or discriminatory.

  • Follow the Anti-Discrimination Policy and Learner Privacy Policy.

  • If you lose connection, re-join as soon as you can.

  • If your audio or video is not working, use the chat to inform the facilitator.

  • For repeated issues, contact DPS support after the session.

VIII. Non-Compliance

  • If a learner’s use of a microphone, camera, chat, or devices disrupts the session or breaks this policy, the facilitator may:

  • Mute the learner’s microphone or limit their chat use;

  • Ask the learner to change their behavior.

  • In serious or repeated cases, remove the learner from the session and report the incident in line with DPS policies.

DPS follows the ANSI/IACET Standard and aims to provide a safe, inclusive, and effective virtual learning space. This policy helps all learners benefit from the training and supports fair, consistent treatment for everyone.
